A Morning Ritual That is Sure to Energize Your Body & Soul

For some, a morning ritual consists of nothing more than jumping out of bed, full of energy and ready to go.

However, those titans who can so easily start their mornings, tend to lose energy in the late afternoon or early evening. And then there are some of us who find it difficult to muster up any energy in the morning.

My morning ritual usually involves lots of groans and then dragging my feet to the bathroom. My energy picks up later in the day.

However, there is something ungrateful about not wanting to face the new day; everyday we are given by God, “in whom we move and breathe and have our being.” (Acts 17).

Every day, we are given one more chance to make a difference in the lives of our families and friends.   We have one more chance to save our souls.

However, it’s not easy for everyone, so I came up with this easy, 3-step morning ritual to lessen my morning grogginess.

Even if you are a morning person, this morning ritual will help you physically, mentally and spiritually.

Morning Ritual 1: Have a Glass of Lemon Water.

morning ritual

Upon awakening, have a drink of lemon water.  I used to do this in the past and I felt amazing.

Lemons are an easy way to add vitamin C to your diet

There are other fruits that boast of more Vitamin C, but a drink of lemon water is an easy way to add vitamin C to your diet.

The juice of one lemon provides 30.7 milligrams of vitamin C.

Lemons help boost energy

Since we’re talking about energy here, Vitamin C helps boost energy.

“Vitamin C offers antioxidant activity and helps with nonheme iron absorption. It also plays a role in peptide hormone biosynthesis, carnitine biosynthesis, and conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine. Carnitine, in turn, plays an important role in energy production at the level of the mitochondria.”

Lemon Water is a Great Way to Stay Hydrated

I love water, but I know people who find water disgusting. Yet, it’s so important to remain hydrated.

Lack of hydration can have a host of detrimental effects, including decreased energy, changes in mood and cognitive performance.

Hydrate in the morning and you’ll have more energy.

How to Make Lemon Water

Squeeze 1/2 of a lemon into eight ounces of water.

You can also opt to make a pitcher of lemon water with multiple slices of water.

***Tip: Leave a glass of lemon water at your bedside so that when you wake up, you don’t have to sleepwalk to the kitchen to get it.  Simply sip it right after you open your eyes.***

Negative Side Effect of Drinking Lemon Water

Drinking lemon water consistently has been shown to degrade enamel, thereby increasing tooth sensitivity.

So, you have three options: don’t drink lemon water; drink it a couple of times a week, instead of every day, or drink it with a straw.

Drinking from a straw causes less enamel deterioration and less increased tooth sensitivity.

You can use normal plastic straws, but recently I found these reusable, collapsible metal straws, which are a great alternative.

Morning Ritual 2: Pray the “Morning Offering”

Praying the morning offering is a wonderful way to start your day.

For those of you who are not Catholic, or maybe who were never taught the morning offering, it is a beautiful prayer that offers your all to God – the good and the bad – the joys and sufferings.

Morning Offering

O Jesus,
through the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
I offer You my prayers, works,
joys and sufferings
of this day for all the intentions
of Your Sacred Heart,
in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
throughout the world,
in reparation for my sins,
for the intentions of all my relatives and friends,
and in particular
for the intentions of the Holy Father.

Amen.

Morning Ritual 3: Do 1 minute of push-ups (about 25 push-ups)

morning ritual

Girly push-ups, where you do push-ups from a kneeling position count!

St Augustine said, “Take care of your body as if you were going to live forever; and take care of your soul as if you were going to die tomorrow.”

Push-ups build core strength and burn calories.  They burn between 25-50  calories depending on your weight.

They also give you a boost of energy. Try doing some pushups in the middle of the day to combat mid-afternoon sluggishness.

If you’re not used to doing 25 pushups, do whatever you can.  Start with 5 or start with ten.

Here are some tips on how to do pushups.

After this ritual, thank God for giving you life and continue with whatever rituals you might have, whether it’s the Divine Office,  the rosary, breakfast or a shower.

Following this ritual will make a difference in your energy level and the way you face the day.

It has for me.
